Let's face it, most people only work because they have to, so why not find an occupation that's a real labour of love?... something I wish I'd done sooner and something I will definitely instill within my children.
Find exactly what makes your heart sing and think about how you can use it to help other people.
That's exactly what mega-babe Ellie Kime aka 'The Wedding Enthusiast' decided to do... establish a career based on making people happy and soaking up the love. Sounds like a dream job right?
Who is the entity that is 'The Wedding Enthusiast'?
It’s me, it’s Cathy, I’ve come home now...
I’m Ellie, most often found to be wearing a patterned trouser that my boyfriend despises (though not floaty white chiffon a la Kate).
I’m always baking, always eating the mix before I put it in the oven, always wearing glitter, and always cackling about something that’s made me particularly happy (though this can range from a text from my parents to a picture of a lizard wearing a party hat – I’m not precious).
I’m lucky enough to live on the Monopoly board, as of July I’m a KCL graduate (BOOYA) and I ADORE a good sunset.
What exactly does The Wedding Enthusiast do?
Other than spend a lot of time on social media fawning over wedding things? I help with wedding tasks, on both ends of the relationship.
Not only do I help couples plan their upcoming weddings, but on the other end, I also help the coolest brands and wedding businesses shout about all of the incredible stuff they have to offer.
This can be social media, blog writing, general events help or ad hoc work on a project – anything, so long as they’re wedding related!
I like to think of it as a general wedding doer, with the hope that one day I may become a wedding-style fairy godmother…
So, how does one become so enthusiastic about weddings?
Definitely not by planning my own wedding – Dad, please don’t have a heart attack, don’t worry!
My enthusiasm came about by being a girl with a burning creative urge and an all-encompassing desire to make people happy. Put those two together, and what do you get? Well, I got weddings.
They’re the perfect blend of everything I adore – astounding creativity, abundant personality, mind-blowing romance, out of this world design, and a bloody good time. Why wouldn’t you want to know that you contributed to the best day of someone’s life?!
It’s always been a dream of mine, aside from a period when I was four and wanted to be a marine biologist (but at this point I was also wearing solely pink and refusing to eat anything that wasn’t bread, so I think I was going through a phase)… My enthusiasm is very much a part of me, so there’s no smoke and mirrors, just glitter and squeals.
I really do love weddings this much, and I really will love yours this much too.
You work with some pretty exciting names in the industry at present, tell us a bit more about this?
Is it really unprofessional if I begin this paragraph with an “AAAAAAGHHHHHHH I do, don’t I?!”? Well, little too late now. I’ve been so so lucky to work with some incredible names in the industry.
In the depths of my horrendous degree, I emailed A Most Curious Wedding Fair, asking if they needed any help with the fair this year. I sent the email not expecting to get anything back but hoping that it would bode well in future when in 10 years time I was still a massive MC fangirl.
Fast forward less than a year and I’m part of their permanent team - under the style queen that is Becky, who’s responsible for all the incredible pink pelmeted perfection that was 2017’s show, the incredible tutelage of Cat and the amazingly inspiring Ann-Marie of AMF Bridal.
I work day in day out on the best wedding fair in the country. I’m insanely proud to work for a team of ladies that are on the forefront of the industry and manage to simultaneously have so many ground-breaking ideas but never compromise their integrity, inclusion, or warmth.
I also work for The Mews Bridal, a French dress boutique based in the leafy and lovely Notting Hill. This has been a dream come true for me, as I help brides in settling on a majorly significant part of the day.
The designers are swoon-worthy creative powerhouses, producing unforgettable and unbelievable designs that are a perfect mix of rock n roll and boho chic.
Ironically for a boutique exclusively selling French designs and la vie belle, The Mews are helping me realise my über cool and über chic London dream – amazing brides with amazing venues and amazing visions.
How can you help modern couples with their planning?
By doing all the bits that people probably wouldn’t expect that anyone would want to do even if they were paid to do it!
Whether it’s a styling brief and supplier suggestions to help turn your smorgasbord of inspiration into something tangible, or it’s the menial task of RSVP managing when the sight of another spreadsheet makes you feel nauseous, I can help you with that.
I’m much more than a service provider too – as cliché as it sounds, I’m always there to help you. If you need a shoulder to whine on and someone to make you a cup of tea, virtually or otherwise, I’m your gal!
You've got your finger well and truly on the pulse when it comes to all things weddings. What's your predicted trend for anyone tying the knot in 2018?
It’s going to be GRAPHIC.
We’ve had a fair few years of grandeur and luxe with more peonies and rose gold than you can shake a well-meaning stick at.
Whilst these trends are hardly going to disappear, I think we’re preparing for an incredible takeover of bolds, brights and geometrics. Simple, clean lines, with no fuss and no frills.
Dresses with striking geometric lace, invitations with bold surface patterns, and wedding décor with clear typography and striking divisions.
We’re going the opposite of twee and heading towards gritty – but still glamorous and bloody good looking.
Be honest, what trend do you really wanna see the back of?
So I’m writing this on a train (sorry to shatter the illusion of an Insta-worthy desk and lots of great notebooks) and I actually just looked around and pulled my laptop closer to me in case anyone saw me say this but ….... matching bridesmaids.
It’s not something I really desperately want to see the back of, but I love nothing more than bridesmaids who look comfortable, and this is just not going to happen with all of your gal pals from different walks of life trying to rock the same dress.
Have a cohesive colour, style, pattern or fabric by all means – their special status should be immediately made known – but let their amazing personality shine through that bit more.
Who are your favourite suppliers rocking the industry at the moment?
Oh my goodness, SO MANY.
There’s a bunch of amazingly cool women I want to be friends with who keep knocking amazing things out of the park – photography and videography duo the Costa Sisters, and photography extraordinaire Agnes Black – and amazingly cool women who I have the fortune of being friends with – make-up artist Amy George, for example.
For amazing Instagrams I stumbled upon by chance and immediately fell in love with, the raw-humoured wedding stationery and décor makers A Braw Wedding and the incredible designers Donut Press, and suppliers I found out about through A Most Curious Wedding Fair and loved more than anything in the world – florist Bloom & Burn, jewellers Stone Hearts Club and cake maker Isobel Bakes.
Finally, people who I’ve followed avidly since my Day 1, and who’ve influenced and inspired me and pushed me more than they could ever know – the photographer Shutter Goes Click and the inimitable embroiderer and bridal designer Hermione de Paula. …can you tell I spend a lot of my time looking at wedding stuff yet?
So there you have it, the wonderful life of a self-proclaimed wedding enthusiast. Could this be the greatest job in the world? I'm gonna go with 'yes'!
