One of my favourite things since launching the Book Of Love directory is hearing from so many cool and creative individuals who are taking matters into their own hands when it comes to turning the wedding industry upside down!
21-year-old Klara Fine, founder of Platter London is a classic example of this, establishing a gap in the market for delicious, mouthwatering grazing platters to satisfy your wedding guests whilst serving as a visual centerpiece too.
I spoke to Klara about her tasty little venture and how she brought the idea to life.
How did the idea for your business evolve?
I was in my final year at Uni studying Fashion Marketing, but my heart just wasn’t in it. I've always wanted to work for myself, and this combined with a passion for food, beautiful food in particular, led to the first idea of Platter London.
I saw a gap in the market and realised there was nothing quite like it available in the UK so I decided to jump into the unknown!
I knew that creating mouthwatering fresh platters, as opposed to sandwich platters, would go down well at any event.
I read a quote once - ‘You can either spend time working on making your own dream happen or making someone else’s dream happen’ – which just clicked for me, I had to do it my own way!
It's been a huge learning curve and it’s a lot harder than it looks!
It may seem fun and glamorous on social media but a lot of time, effort and hard work that goes into it. Each platter is prepared with so much love and care and it can take hours and hours to create and deliver!
Platter London has since evolved into a high-end catering service with lots of happy clients.
Your platters could be described as food art. Do you design the layout before-hand?
So many people ask me this!
In an ideal super-organised world, I would, but the answer is no. I prefer to freestyle and work with what ingredients I have on the day. It really depends on my mood!
That being said, I do have a vague idea of what I’m going to do in my head. Particularly for big events with lots of people needing to be catered for, that does require a lot of forward planning.
Also, I am lucky in that the platters are so photogenic - all the bright colours and delicious ingredients look great anyway, so they tend to market themselves.
Aside from lots delicious fresh fruits, what weird and wonderful ingredients to you use?
I do love to pile on as many fruits as possible!
Cheese is also a big feature on the platters - A particular favourite is the Truffled Moliterno - so tasty!
I also always love to add fresh honeycomb and fresh flowers straight from my garden.
In terms of weird and wonderful - I love to create platters for seasonal occasions - for example, my Halloween platters will contain baby pumpkins stuffed with homemade candied nuts, and mini toffee apples. Yum!
Experimenting with different foods is so much fun, and is one of the perks of the job.
Describe what your dream platter would consist of?
A wide range of different cheeses with artisan crackers, complimented with some of my wonderful homemade sweet chilli jam, juicy fresh fruits, and strawberries coated in dark chocolate.... Not forgetting a few sweet treats thrown in, maybe some home-made brownies or macarons sprinkled with edible glitter...
