Hiring a wedding planner/stylist was not something I ever considered for my own big day... I don't know, maybe it's the control freak in me, but I couldn't bring myself to share my vision with anyone and trust that they would deliver it better than I could myself...... Bridezilla much?!
These days, more and more modern couples are opting for some all important 'expertise' in this department in order to save time with sourcing suppliers, save money... potentially... come up with creative ideas and solutions that they could never have dreamed of and also, most importantly, alleviate a lot of the stresses involved with wedding planning.
I spoke husband and wife duo, Sam and Lisa from Carmela Weddings about the benefits of using a wedding planner/stylist and what makes them stand out from the rest!
A husband and wife duo?... YAY!... Carmela Weddings or the marriage... What came first?
We first thought about Carmela Weddings about 4 years ago while drinking cocktails in London. The more we chatted about it, the more we realised we just had to go for it!
We've only been married just over two years so CW came first!
There is so much that falls under the guise of 'wedding planning'. What services do you offer at Carmela Weddings?
We offer everything from a simple 2-hour inspiration session where couples can have a drink with us and chat about ideas they have.
Some couples want to do the whole thing themselves but need questions answering about budgets, what they have to think about if they want a dry hire venue or simply to chat about styling suggestions.
Then there's the couple that has started to plan the wedding themselves but gets overwhelmed or simply runs out of time so we take over.
Lastly, there's our full wedding planning package where the couple can literally give us as much of their wedding planning as they like! This can include anything from moodboard designs, sourcing everything, making sure they stick to the budget, looking through contracts, managing RSVPs and of course, being there on the day to make sure it all runs smoothly!
I have to confess, I didn't use a wedding planner myself. What are the benefits of hiring someone for this purpose?
There are so many reasons.
Our clients tend to not have the time to plan a wedding themselves.
People also tend to come to us as the experts in stylish city weddings because they realise we know the best suppliers and venues for them.
Some know they want a really creative, design-led day but have no idea how to make the look in their heads into reality - we love those guys because we can start to really have some fun with design!
For couples who are unfamiliar with how the service would work, talk us through the process from beginning to end.
Once hired, we sit down for a couple of hours (usually in your favourite bar) and talk through anything that's already in your head about your wedding.
With the majority of our super-stylish clients, they know what they don't want so we get that out too!
We talk budget allocation and which parts of the day are the priority for the couple.
We start off with finding their perfect venue (usually somewhere not known for its weddings!) and then start designing the look.
Once that's agreed on, it's time to source the best suppliers for the job and get down to the little details to make the whole day truly about our couple.
We have meetings regularly as we go along to make sure everyone is still on track and we make sure that we keep it fun and alleviate any stress.
What makes Carmela Weddings different from other wedding planners out there?
Our whole ethos is different.
We don't believe in rules, we think you should make your own traditions and we like to create wedding days that really show the personalities and passions of our couples.
Whether that's luxury, edgy or just really fun we do like to put a little twist on things. There really is no need for a cookie cutter wedding these days!
We also like to think we're quite fun to be around. We don't take ourselves too seriously!
What was your wedding like? Anything you would change?
We had an al-fresco intimate wedding in a vineyard in Malta. A little bit retro and a lot of fun, it was essentially the best party we've ever had!
The only thing I'd change about it is that I really want to wear a wedding jumpsuit now... (Lisa)
What / Who's hot right now in wedding world?
Jumpsuits - see comment above!
It's so on trend to wear something a little different and more you. We're seeing more masculine touches at weddings for 2018 which I love - simple lines, minimalist and a bit darker.
I can see the geo trend hanging around for another year or so too and we'll always love an Edison bulb even when they go out of fashion!
Any trends you would like to see the back of?
We're not calling it a trend (it's over!) but it's time vintage did one. If we never hear the words mismatched tea cups again it will be too soon.
Vintage tea cups.... BE GONE !!!
I have to say, I agree... they were cute for a while but there are so many new, exciting trend emerging, it's time to put your granny's best china back in the cupboard.
