Behind every great photograph is a great photographer and a great story.
I spoke to Book Of Love's self-proclaimed, relaxed and fun-loving, Jill Evans about life behind the lens.
How long have you been a wedding photographer and what made you start?
I've been photographing weddings for about 7 years now.
Funnily enough, when I started, I thought I would hate it! I was quite into photography and the first of my friends to get married asked if I would take a few snaps at his wedding. I decided if I was going to do it, I'd do it properly and did loads of research (I hadn't even been to a proper wedding before!). I ended up loving it and decided to pursue it properly.
Photography is my full-time job these days and although I do lots of other types of shoots, weddings are my bread and butter and I love them.
How would you describe your style as a photographer?
Fun loving, relaxed, and people-focused.
I'm all for showing relationships and moments, so you can expect me to be mingling and getting involved, following the action and looking for laughs and hugs.
I like to read the room as well - sometimes I capture those moments better by staying a little further back. Weddings are full of such a range of emotions, and it really depends on what's going on - I like to think I adapt well, which means I don't miss those key moments.
I don't stage too much and instead, work with couples to bring out their true personalities and style. I love to use very natural posing techniques and capture movement, fun and love instead of stiff formality. I don't spend forever setting up elaborate shots, I prefer spending the time getting my couples to be themselves on camera and enjoy the experience.
Describe your favourite type of couple to work with.
My couples are fun loving, do things their own way and stick two fingers up to all the "should" in the wedding industry.
Whether they're having a super traditional or totally off the wall wedding, they're doing what makes them truly happy. I love these types of couples because their wedding days are full of genuine emotions and moments because everyone is just being themselves and enjoying the day.
I work with all kinds of couples with all kinds of styles, but these are the elements that they have in common... good times, good vibes, happy souls.
What was your favourite wedding trend of 2017?
Not so much a trend, but I've been loving the rise in popularity of unplugged weddings. It's very easy to see the difference when guests put their phones and cameras away and stay present in the moment. It's definitely something I'd like to see continue - it's nice to have wedding galleries that aren't full of devices, and there's a lot more human interaction on the day at unplugged weddings.
What would you like to see more of in 2018?
JUMPSUITS, all day long. I bloody love a jumpsuit.
If you had to choose one 'money shot' from your portfolio, which one would it be?
This is a tough one - so many photos mean so much in lots of different ways.
A well-timed photo can tell all kinds of stories, but if I had to pick just one it would be this one.
I was lucky enough to be photographing a good friend's wedding, and it had been a typical British day in terms of the weather. We had a hailstorm right when we should have been shooting portraits, the tipi had leaked, the ground was muddy and yet the day was still perfect and happy.
At the end of the night, we were in the middle of attempting to light some very soggy candles and I glanced up to see the couple having a little moment. I snapped this really quickly and it all just came together perfectly. It looks posed but it really wasn't, they were just enjoying their wedding and the conditions were finally peaceful and perfect. I love this photo!
