Come on... is this not the face of celebrations?!
When Katie first contacted me to say 'HEY! You need a 'celebrants' category in your Book Of Love directory', I thought, 'You're right!, I do!' ... 'cept I had this misconception of some frumpy old git, spittin' out lines that are sooooo generic, my 4 year old son could do better.
Described by her best pal as someone who personifies 'love and happiness', why the hell would you not book such a person to conduct your wedding ceremony?!
In walks 'Katie The Celebrant'!... changing the face of celebrancy... making it colourful, fun and most of all, personal, to each and every couple!
What exactly is a wedding celebrant?
A wedding celebrant is a special person you choose to conduct your wedding.
There are loads out there, but the really, really good ones are performers, storytellers, designers... sometimes therapists!
They will spend a lot of time getting to know their couples, in order to write a kickass ceremony that ultimately reflects that couple's one-of-a-kind love story!
How does a celebrant differ from a priest or registrar?
I'm a humanist celebrant so the weddings I conduct aren't legal ceremonies, and there is absolutely no religious content in them. That means it's all about the couple, and so every single ceremony I work on is completely unique.
I don't ask couples to make any promises before God, or just prompt them to regurgitate legalese that is meaningless to them. The couples I work with have often written their own vows, with my help, so every word that is said during the ceremony is of some significance to them!
What made you become one?
I had a civil ceremony for my own wedding, which was fine but a bit... meh. THEN I went to a friend's humanist wedding ceremony and it was so personal and hilarious and FUN and powerful. So often in weddings, the ceremonies are the boring bit, but this was totally the highlight of the day! I thought - I want to be a part of THAT!
What type of couple would opt for a wedding celebrant?
I wouldn't say there is a 'type' as such...
Couples that opt for one tend to be thoughtful; they've considered the alternatives and actively looked into humanist ceremonies. All of them like the principal of creating a personalised ceremony that actually reflects who they are as as a couple.
Describe how one of your ceremonies differs from a traditional wedding ceremony?
I'm very flexible so the weddings I work on can incorporate traditional elements, or reject tradition entirely.
The big difference, really, is that religious or civil ceremonies are quite rigid about what can be said, and especially strict on the wording around the vows. I love it when couples throw that out entirely.
With a humanist ceremony, you can say whatever you like to the person you're going to spend the rest of your life with! That's totally as it should be!
Because my ceremonies are deeply personal, they tend to be full of the unexpected and lots of laughter!
Photographers, in particular, love humanist ceremonies because the couple and their guests feel more involved, and so are looking that much more engaged in the photos!
Tell us about your most memorable ceremony...
I did one really small wedding at the couple's house. As it was such an intimate crowd, I was invited to the drinks reception, prior to the ceremony, where the family tried to ply me with glasses of Prosecco before we got going. It was a really relaxed, friendly and fun wedding, where everyone knew each other. Very special!
What's the most important thing about choosing a celebrant?
I would say, there are so many people out there doing this sort of work. Pick a person you can really relate to, and have a great vibe with! The wonderful thing about choosing your celebrant is getting to know the person who ends up marrying you. The two of you aren't standing there with a stranger. So you want that person to be someone you can have a really positive relationship with!
