When I first heard from Laura of This Modern Revelry about joining the Book Of Love directory, I have to say, it was the most hi-energy email I have ever received... better than a double espresso on an empty stomach.
'' We noticed you don’t have any videographers yet - maybe because most of them are not as cool as us.''
After checking out some of their stuff it was clear to me that This Modern Revelry are ON TOP of their game... creating the most exciting wedding videos that you will ever see and absolute flawless too.
I hear from a lot of couples who regret not having a videographer. Don't make the same mistake. Read on and watch these short clips to see that This Modern Revelry are worth it.
Another husband and wife duo from my Book Of Love, YAY! Share your story!
We’re Laura + Alan – filmmakers, party starters and husband + wife.
We constantly lose track of time when we’re editing (oh hello 4am, we meet again), we’re obsessed with travelling, and we’re kind of blown away by how much our life has changed since we started filming weddings.
We’re just two people who thought they had to leave their love of filming and music behind to pursue – well – practical things. We interviewed, commuted and had ‘real jobs’ but when we rediscovered filmmaking we couldn’t stop. It was (and still is) our lives. And now? We get to spend our days hanging out with the most awesome, fun-loving, in-love people. We get to see them get married, party their butts off and create films that will knock your socks off. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
When and why did you decide to start This Modern Revelry?
Quite frankly, the most boring ass wedding films we’d ever seen... The ones where you can’t make it through the first 30 seconds because you’ve seen nothing of the couple yet?... The ones where you can’t figure out if anyone else was actually invited?... Yeah, those ones.
We started This Modern Revelry in 2016 when a friend asked us to capture their wedding and we’ve never looked back. Their wedding day was all about the relaxed, chilled out fun and they wanted to see a film that was ALL about the vibe of the day. So we damn well did it and This Modern Revelry started to happen.
You have a really distinct style. What inspires you?
We get our inspiration from everywhere BUT the wedding film industry. YouTube - yep... Travel bloggers who make the coolest films ever and have you hankering to climb a mountain in Norway - those too... Music videos, commercials, films on the big screen. If we’re going to capture your wedding day you better believe we’re going to make it look every damn bit as fun as you’re going to remember it. So we’re shaking up the industry, film by film and we’re changing the game.
You always seem to nail it with the music! How long does it take you to source the right soundtrack?
Music is a big part of our process. We’ve both played instruments. We’ve both been on stage. Music and performing has been such a big part of our lives that it’s literally how we met (the rules are - we'll only tell you about it if you ask us to be at your wedding, ok?)
Finding the right track to compliment a wedding day is a really fine balance. When we’re choosing the song for a highlights film we’ve been there on the day – seen everything that went down and all the tracks you chose that you felt represented you in those big moments. Music has such a personality and when we find the right song that suits your vibe, that’s when everything starts to fall into place. It can take a while to get the right fit, but when it happens it’s pretty awesome.
In what ways do you differ from other videographers out there?
We fly the flag for couples who want their wedding film to look just as fun as their day was. We’re all about kick-ass couples with a shed load of style who know there’s more to a wedding than a close up of shoes.
There are tonnes of blogs out there that tell you the most important thing for your wedding videographer to be is ‘discrete’ or ‘unobtrusive’. That might have been true when the peak of wedding videography was an old guy in the corner with a giant camcorder and zero social skills, but let’s pretend that was never a thing.
For us, the best way to really get the vibe of your wedding is to be right there in the thick of it. Definitely not standing in the shadows hoping to capture the back of someone’s head. I mean, don’t get us wrong, we’re not going to do the hula in the middle of your ceremony or poke a giant lens into conversations - but you better believe if there’s a conga going on - we’ll be right there in the middle of it filming like our lives depend on it.
We’re not invisible. We’re not sneaky or creepy. We’ll hang with you guys and make sure you’re having the best day you possibly can. We’ll be there to both capture and create incredible moments. We’ll shake our butts on the dance floor with your family and friends and have drinks with you at the bar. So when you’re finished partying at 1am we can create a film with a vibe more at home in a music video than a party political broadcast.
What's your advice to anyone wondering whether or not they should hire a videographer?
If you’re not sure if you should have one – chances are you haven’t found the right videographer for you yet. It’s all about the right style whether you’re looking for traditional, cinematic, modern, storytelling, super8, romantic, documentary – it’s all out there. When you come to look for a videographer just focus on how you want to remember your day. If you find a videographer whose work makes you feel like you want your guests to feel, that’s a good sign they’ll be able to capture it the way you want to remember it.
