When it comes to planning a wedding, there are countless traditions and customs that you can consider. One of the most iconic aspects of wedding receptions is the wedding cake. Ah, wedding cakes - the sugary centrepiece of the big day. But for as much as it’s a tradition, many couples are asking themselves, "Do we really need a cake at our wedding?”

A slice of history.

Traditionally, the wedding cake has been a focal point of the wedding reception, symbolising the couple's union and shared future. It's often a stunning centrepiece that draws attention and serves as a sweet finale to the meal. However, as weddings evolve to reflect the personalities and preferences of the couple, the question of whether a traditional tiered cake, or any cake at all, is necessary has become a topic of debate.

Now as much as we want to encourage you to break traditions we don’t want to deny anyone cake!! There are so many superstitions and traditions around wedding cake, with some of those dating back to Roman and Medieval times, but we’ve moved on from 300 years ago - we no longer throw our shit out of the window so I think, thankfully it is possible to move on! But if you do want a delicious and stunning centrepiece then remember it doesn't have to be your quintessential white iced, fruit wedding cake, although if that’s your thing, why the hell not!

We've seen cakes in all shapes and sizes, from towering multi-tiered masterpieces to quirky, non-traditional creations that perfectly reflect the couple's personalities. Whether you're a die-hard fan of classic buttercream or you prefer a modern twist with geometric designs and metallic accents, there's no denying that wedding cakes can be a delicious expression of love and celebration.

One tradition used to be that the groom had a separate cake, now as much as I HATE that idea, the idea of having more than one cake, or each choosing a completely different cake is very appealing!

The Case For A Wedding Cake!

Other than it’s delicious and looks amazing! For many couples, the wedding cake holds sentimental value and serves as a meaningful tradition. Cutting the cake together can be a cherished moment, symbolising unity and the first task you perform together. For others it’s a great photo opportinity!

Whatever your reason, a beautifully crafted cake can be a work of art, and a visual feast. The artistry that goes into decorating wedding cakes is truly astounding. Fondant sculptures, intricate piping, hand-painted details - these confectionery masterpieces often rival the wedding dress in terms of sheer elegance and beauty. And with the rise of edible flowers, cool designs, and even metallic foil accents, the possibilities are as endless as your sweet tooth's imagination.

Let's talk flavours, shall we? Gone are the days of plain vanilla (although there's nothing wrong with a classic). Couples these days are opting for bold flavours like salted caramel, matcha green tea, or even decadent red velvet. And for the more adventurous foodies, there's no shortage of options - from tropical coconut and lime to rich, indulgent dark chocolate with chilli.

Alternatives To Cake.

While the wedding cake holds a special place in many couples' hearts, in recent years, some couples have forgone the idea of a traditional cake entirely, choosing to celebrate with a dessert that holds personal significance, such as a favourite childhood treat or a cultural delicacy. Of course, we can't ignore the rise of the non-cake cake too. Yep, we're talking about tiers of cheese, stacks of donuts, or even towers of decadent macarons. Maybe you're not a cake person (gasp!), or perhaps you just want to surprise your guests with something unexpected. Whatever your reason, alternative "cakes" are a fun and delicious way to break tradition and add a touch of personality to your dessert table.

Making YOUR Decision

Ultimately, the decision of whether you need a cake at your wedding is a personal one. Consider your own traditions, tastes, and budget when weighing up the options. If the symbolism and tradition of a wedding cake resonate with you, then it may hold a special place in your celebration. However, if you find yourselves drawn to alternative dessert options that better reflect your personalities and tastes, don't be afraid to break from tradition.

Remember that your wedding should be a reflection of you as a couple. Whether you choose a towering cake adorned with fresh flowers or a whimsical display of donuts, the most important thing is that it brings you joy and creates a memorable experience for you and your guests.

So, whether you're a traditionalist or a rule-breaker when it comes to wedding cakes, do you have to have one? No of course you don’t! But would you want to skip it - hell no I wouldn't!
